PICU Happenings

We'll start this post with a Pop Quiz (blame it on the teacher in me...)

No news for a few days means:
A) There is no "significant" medical update
B) Days when the waiting feels long and hard are not the best days to update a public forum
C) The days have been unbelievably full
D) All of the above

Correct Answer:  D

Nathan is actually not showing any progress in the right direction since he was taken off the ventilator last Wed.  In fact, he has been teeter-tottering as to whether or not he needs to be put back on.  As of yesterday treatments and efforts to trouble shoot why he is still working so hard to breath even with significant oxygen support were really ramped up.

We actually haven't even been able to do the study that will give us an indicator of how successful the digestive surgery was because they are unable to conduct the study on the type and amount of oxygen support Nathan is currently receiving.  We came to the hospital to address an eating concern, which seems pretty primary.  But breathing trumps eating every time.  As long as he is on this specific type of oxygen support (called Vapo-therm) Nathan will have to remain the in PICU

It's actually been a pretty hard few days emotionally.  The waiting with no progress and no diagnosis, the seriousness of the concerns and potential ramifications for what seems like the zillionth time since October has felt heavy.   Please keep praying for endurance for Jonny and myself.

Once again, a montage of people have rallied to care for us in so many creative, practical and helpful ways.  Thank you.

Silver Lining: Since Nathan wasn't on the vent so long this time he weened from his drugs very well!  Surprisingly, even as  he is getting the oxygen pushed into his nose at a pretty high volume and still working hard to breathe, he is being as pleasant as he possibly can be and trying to make the most of his time in the hospital bed.  Here are a few videos to prove it.  (Please forgive my adoring/slightly annoying "Mom voice".)
